ADHD Testing
For Children, Teens, & Adults
Are You Seeking ADHD Testing For Yourself or A Loved One?
Have ADHD symptoms been sabotaging your ability to achieve success?
Do you look back and wonder if challenges in your past are the result of undiagnosed ADHD?
For the first time, are you considering getting an ADHD assessment?
Maybe you have a hard time focusing on work or school, keeping up with your to-do list, and maintaining social obligations. Perhaps it feels like other people don’t understand your challenges or take them seriously—they seem to view you as lazy or careless instead of realizing that you suffer from a very real condition. Maybe you’ve tried self-medicating to help with your ADHD symptoms, but that only seems to make things worse in the long run. As a result, you may be considering ADHD testing so that you can understand your symptoms better and get the support and accommodations you need.
I think that if we’re going to address both audiences, adults with ADHD and parents of children with ADHD, it would be best to address the adults directly first, since they’re likely the ones reading the page and we begin by asking “are you seeking an ADHD assessment for yourself…”
Perhaps You’re The Parent Of A Child With Suspected ADHD
As a parent, do you feel like a bystander watching helplessly as your child struggles to reach their potential and keep up with their peers’ achievements? Maybe you thought they were being lazy or unmotivated, but now you’re starting to wonder if the problem is more than that. Perhaps they’re getting in trouble at school for behaviors that aren’t intentional and seem beyond their control. They might be struggling to earn good grades, sit still in class, and pay attention to what their teachers say.
Whether you’re seeking a ADHD assessment services for yourself or your child, we encourage you to connect with Wildflower Psych. Many People In Our World Today Face Challenges Caused By ADHD
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 11.4% of U.S. children (3 to 17 years old) are diagnosed with ADHD and the percentage of youth diagnosed increases each year.* Although ADHD symptoms typically appear by age 3 to 6 years, many people are not diagnosed until later in childhood or even adulthood.
Individuals with ADHD typically have a longstanding history of behavioral problems including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. They generally understand what is expected of them, but struggle to carry out tasks nonetheless. Symptoms of ADHD range from mild to severe and can often impact functioning across multiple settings including the home, school, work, and the broader community.
In Today’s World, ADHD Is Especially Hard To Manage
This is because of the constant bombardment of technology, social media content, and tech-related distractions. Furthermore, family values and cultural attitudes about ADHD may delay individuals or families from speaking with a mental health professional and seeking a diagnosis. Many families and cultures don’t believe in seeking mental health support, which only makes ADHD worse.
The truth is that there is no shame in taking an ADHD assessment, as it can give you a clear understanding of your challenges and set you up for future success. ADHD testing will show you which of the three ADHD subtypes (i.e., inattentive, impulsive/hyperactive, and combined) fits your symptoms profile best. Based on which ADHD subtype you have, you can then make informed decisions about treatment and accommodations.
ADHD Testing Can Help You Understand Yourself On A Deeper Level And Set You Up For Future Success
Obtaining an ADHD assessment is necessary for an accurate diagnosis since it helps confirm whether your symptoms are caused by ADHD or another condition. With a proper diagnosis, you can seek out more effective treatment and support including behavioral interventions, environmental accommodations, and medication as well as executive functioning/ADHD coaching and lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.
In addition to a formal diagnosis, you’ll receive a detailed report outlining test results, an individualized treatment plan, and appropriate community referrals. The treatment for ADHD includes—but isn’t limited to—behavioral therapy, parent coaching, executive functioning training, medication, and modification of school or work environments. After the ADHD assessment process is complete, Dr. Hung is available for follow-up care to help you achieve and maintain success following testing.
On a deeper level, an ADHD evaluation can lead to better self-esteem, increase your self-awareness, and reveal your strengths and weaknesses related to ADHD. Greater understanding can empower you to leverage your strengths and address areas that need improvement.
For children, early testing can help them connect to interventions that enable them to manage symptoms and improve long-term outcomes. Most families appreciate expediency during the testing process so that the evaluation report is completed quickly and your child is connected with appropriate support, services, and resources.
What To Expect During ADHD Testing Sessions
Drawing from over a decade of neuropsychological and psychological testing, Dr. Hung helps children, teens, and adults understand ADHD as well as other mental health conditions.
Clinical Interview — The ADHD assessment process starts with a thorough clinical interview to obtain information about your concerns, symptoms, daily functioning, and developmental history.
Questionnaires — Following the clinical interview, you’ll be asked to complete standardized questionnaires and rating scales about behavior, attention, mood, anxiety, and other relevant concerns. Collateral information from parents, caregivers, and teachers will be collected when feasible and applicable.
Formal Testing — The ADHD assessment process may also include cognitive testing to assess attention, memory, and executive functioning. The test battery is tailored to each individual and will depend on the referral question(s). For instance, an ADOS-2 or WISC-V may be added to the battery if you’re seeking diagnostic clarification about autism or cognitive functioning, respectively.
Feedback Session — Shortly after testing is complete (typically within one-to-two weeks), you’ll receive a written report that includes a summary of the results and recommendations. The results of the report will be reviewed in detail during the feedback session. The evaluation report is yours to share with your family, school, employer, or healthcare team.
You May Have Some Questions About ADHD Testing
Do you work with the school or provide guidance on navigating the school system to help set my child up for success?
Dr. Hung is passionate about advocacy in the schools. She provides guidance, templates, and actionable steps to help you feel empowered when working with the school system and learning about an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. Direct school consultation and care coordination services are available when needed.
Do you assess for mental health disorders besides ADHD?
Yes, we do. In fact, the ADHD assessment itself evaluates for common co-morbid conditions including autism, anxiety and mood disorders. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, autism, and learning issues may mimic or co-occur with ADHD. According to the CDC, 60% of children with ADHD have at least one other mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder.*
