    Child-friendly explanation of diabetes:

    What is Diabetes?

Someone is diagnosed with aiabetes when their pancreas is no longer making insulin. It is no one's fault and nothing that you or your parents did wrong.

Just like a car, our body needs fuel to run. Our fuel is food- it helps us think, play, and stay healthy. For a car to work it needs fuel but it also needs a key. Our body's key is called insulin. Insulin helps turn the food we eat into the energy we need. Since your body isn't making insulin you have a very important job to stay healthy. Now, you get to be your own pancreas!

    Or

When we eat the sugar from our food goes into our bloodstream. Then our pancreas releases insulin that helps this sugar go into our cells so we can do all the important things like think, play, and stay healthy. Insulin is like a "key" that opens doors to our cells. Someone is diagnosed with Diabetes when their body (pancreas) is no longer making insulin.
